Professional SRIKHOL

A drum originating in eastern India and used in Carnatic music. Both ends are covered with goatskin heads held in place by camel skin tensioners. The heads have a black circle called a ‘shiai’ made from flour and ferric oxide, which allows for the modulation of harmonics.

GATHAM

An instrument made of clay, similar to a jar, used in Carnatic music in southern India. The fingers, edges and palms of the hands are used to strike different areas of the surface to produce different tones and timbres.

 

TINAJA

Made of clay, sometimes with metal inlays, widely used for classical music in southern India.

There are two resonance actions, one is by tapping with the fingers and palms of the hands, and the other is by closing or opening the hole in the instrument with the stomach.
