Sitar

Style: RAVI SHANKAR

Sitar RAVI SHANKAR  Kharaj Pancham  7 strings. The dominant solo instrument in Indian classical music. It belongs to the lute family. The sound box is made from gourd and the neck from light wood, with 22 movable convex frets, 6 or 7 main strings and 13 sympathetic strings underneath.

Style: VILAYAT KHAN

Sitar VILAYAT KHAN style –  Gandhar Pancham 6 main strings and 12 sympathetic strings. The dominant solo instrument in Indian classical music. It belongs to the lute family. Sound box made from gourd and light wood handle, with 22 movable convex frets, 6 or 7 main strings and 13 sympathetic strings underneath.

Surbahar

It is closely related to the sitar, but has a lower range of tones and a wooden neck with wide frets, allowing for a six-note glissando on the same fret. It has four rhythm strings, four main strings, and 15 to 17 sympathetic strings. There are two bridges; the main strings pass over the large bridge and the sympathetic strings over the small bridge.

 

Saraswati Vina

Created in the 17th century, it is associated with Saraswati, goddess of learning and the arts. It is a plucked string instrument used to accompany Carnatic music (southern India). The veena has been modified and refined over centuries and has been used since ancient times. It has 24 fixed copper frets and seven strings, four of which are used for the melody and the other three (thalam) as rhythmic notes and pedals. It is made of jackwood and, in addition to the sound box, has a second pumpkin-shaped resonator under the pegbox.

Sarod

A smaller version of the sitar. It consists of a sound box and a light neck made of teak or boxwood, all covered with skin.

It has six melodic strings and two bass strings. Several sympathetic strings run through the deep body of the sarod, which is covered with skin and has a metal fingerboard.

Sarangi

A stringed instrument that most closely resembles the human voice in its richness and melodiousness. Played as a solo instrument or to accompany Khyal singing.

It consists of four main strings without frets and between 35 and 40 sympathetic strings.

Described by Yehudi Menuhin as ‘the most moving and revealing expression of the soul of Indian feeling and thought’.
